Aachen (16)39 2 marck
This specimen was lot 5286 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$278 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"AACHEN, STADT, 2 Mark 1639, mit Titel Ferdinands III. RR Kl. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Aachen, two mark of 1639, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Very rare, minor planchet defects, very fine.)"
The city of Aachen on the border between Germany and the Netherlands, issued few of the coins popular with collectors today, i.e., thalers and gold coins. There is an extensive series of small change, including one, two, three, four and six marcks. This coin weighs about 1/20 of a thaler but, being debased, was probably worth less. The SCWC records it for 1639 and 1646.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 1,48 g.
