Ponterio sale 168, lot 50119

This specimen was lot 50119 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $441. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 20 Mark, 1872-H. NGC XF Details--Excessive Surface Hairlines." This type was struck 1872-74 and is the most common of the twenty mark from Hesse.

Recorded mintage: 183,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 7.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW.
