This specimen was lot 1941 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 26,000 (about US$34,259 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"20 Mark 1872. München. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich-gutes vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, twenty mark of 1872, extremely rare, extremely fine or better.)"
Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. The gold issues of this locale are scanty and rare.
Recorded mintage: 3,000 plus proofs.
