Peru 1710-L H 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 7316 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $18,400. The catalog description[1] noted,
"PERU. 8 Escudos, 1710-H. Ex: '1715 Plate Fleet,' recovered from Corrigan's wreck. Exceptionally choice strike, remarkably round planchet with two full dates, including a full four-digit date on obverse. Full obverse and reverse legends. Minimal doubling, two minor scratches. Ex: Ponterio 1/09 NYINC auction lot #944, where it sold for $17,250. Ex: Ponterio 3/96 CICF auction, lot #803; EX: Frank Sedwick Feb./Mar., 1992 price list where it was described as 'Exquisite perfectly centered, as close as we have ever seen to a Lima 8 Escudo Royal'. With 'Real Eight Co., Inc.' certificate. Nice strike on a large flan, full legends on both sides, one small edge flaw and two tiny scratches. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE."
Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer Hurtado stamped his coins 1695-1710. Cobs were struck at Lima until 1752, twenty years after Mexico City had switched to milled coinage.
