Sincona sale 79, lot 1297

This specimen was lot 1297 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,637 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, George III. 1760-1820. 1/2 Guinea 1772, London. Second laureate head. Rare date. NGC Details. Altered surface." This bust appeared on the half guinea 1764-69 and 1773-74. By this time, the mint had ceased to produce anything but gold coins and Maundy sets, causing a grave shortage of circulating media. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.17 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 4.15 g.

Catalog reference: KM 599, Spink 3732. Bull 809. Fr-359a.
