from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70738
GB SB220-70738r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70738 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy 4 Pence, 1772/0. George III. NGC AU-58. A boldly struck coin with crisp details and dark gray toning throughout." This type was struck intermittently 1763-66, 1770-72, 1776, 1780, 1784-86. Enough were saved that it is today not rare. Unlike the silver penny and tuppence, the groat survived as a circulating coin until the reign of queen Victoria but it was gradually superseded by the sixpence. This overdate obtains a slight premium.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.01 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 596.1, S-3750.
