Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23634
SB121-23634r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23634 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 2 Pence, 1772 (2nd 7/6). London Mint. George III. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. Maundy type. Overdate variety. Quite deeply toned, this choice minor features a clear overdate as well as some shimmering luster in the more protected areas." This type is listed for 1763-66, 1772, 1776 and 1780-86. Many were included in the Maundy sets and thereby saved. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.00 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3756; KM-595.
