Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 806

This specimen was lot 806 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €230 (about US$291 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu de France, 1720A, Paris. Réformation. D/ B. enfantin à d., l., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV (1715-74), silver écu of France of 1720, Paris mint, reformed. Obverse: draped, cuirassed and laureate infant bust to right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Fine to very fine.)"

The specimen shown is an écu au grand écusson de France of the Paris mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[1] notes the type as rather scarce but more available than the succeeding écu aux 8 L of 1724-25. The type was issued 1720-24.

Recorded mintage: unknown but the most common date, all struck on "reformed" blanks.

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 24,30 g.
