Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74737
SB925-74737r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 99084 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV 1/3 Ecu 1720-B MS63 NGC, Rouen mint. 1/3 Ecu de France. Flan Reforme, trefoil below bust. While Gadoury does not list a Flan Reforme variety from this mint, auction records indicate this a more common piece than thought. Regardless, the conditional state remains stunning and embellished by a vivid autumnal hue throughout." The second specimen was lot 74737 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE. Petit Louis d'Argent (1/3 Ecu), 1720-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XV. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1720-23 in large numbers while the adventurer John Law dominated the French government. Many were struck over petit Louis d'argent struck in 1720. Worth 3 livres on its introduction, it was reduced in steps to 1 livre 6 sols 8 deniers in September 1724.

Recorded mintage: 293,524 fn plus a few rf[2].

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26-28 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/2 № 568, Dr/4 № 832, KM 457.3, cf. Gad-306 (for Flan Neuf), Dupl-1667A.
