Jean Elsen sale 123, lot 824
France JE123-824r.jpg

This specimen was lot 824 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €330 (about US$480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AV 20 francs, 1806 U, Turin. Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14) gold twenty francs of 1806, Turin mint, very fine.)"

Gold coins of the French branch mints are very scarce as a class and probably underpriced. This type was struck 1806 only at five mints of which only Paris is common.

Recorded mintage: 17,242[2].

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered *DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE*.

Catalog reference: Gad-1023, F.513/4, KM 674.4.
