Künker Auction 426, lot 3481

This specimen was lot 3481 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €185 (about US$262 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Julius, 1568-1589. Reichstaler 1581, Goslar. Lichttaler. Hübsche Patina, leichte Prägeschwäche, min. korrodiert, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Julius 1568-89, "light" thaler of 1581, Goslar mint. Handsome patina, slightly weakly struck, corrosion spots, very fine.)"

This "light" thaler was struck 1577-82 and is fairly common. The nickname derives from the candlestick held by the wild man. The reverse legend, "Aliis inserviendo consumor", translates as "I am consumed by serving others."
