Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1579 thaler Dav-9063
This specimen was lot 32586 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Germany. Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Julius Taler 1579 AU50 NGC. Expressing a bold split date flanking the central wildman motif, the surfaces containing abundant argent luster and a pleasing spread of azure color decorating the outer border. From the Amsterdam Collection." This type was issued 1577-82 and is fairly common for the period. The so-called "light" thaler refers to the candle in the wild man's hand, not the coin's weight. The reverse legend, "Aliis inserviendo consumor", translates as "I am consumed by serving others."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
