SB823-55401r.jpg

This specimen was lot 55401 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. "Light" Taler, 1582. Goslar Mint. Julius. PCGS Genuine--Scrape, EF Details. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was issued 1577-82 and is fairly common for the period. The so-called "light" thaler refers to the candle in the wild man's hand, not the coin's weight. The reverse legend, "Aliis inserviendo consumor", translates as "I am consumed by serving others."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-9063; KM-MB173; Welter-576.
