Heritage sale 3041, lot 31295
Mexico H3041-31295r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31295 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold 2 Escudos 1798 Mo-FM MS62 NGC, Mexico City mint. Mint State with strong luster, a few scattered contact marks in the fields and gorgeous reddish toning. A flan crack is visible near 3 o'clock, but does not detract from the piece's good eye-appeal. A much scarcer date, missing in Norweb, Gerber and Eliasberg. Rare in this select preservation. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. The type was struck 1791-1808 and is the most plentiful of all the colonial two escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14221, Fr-45, KM 132, Cal-363.
