Saxe-Gotha 1675 thaler Dav-7458
This specimen was lot 1315 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Ernst der Fromme, 1640-1675. Reichstaler 1675, Gotha, auf seinen Tod und seine Beisetzung. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Herrliche Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr attraktives, vorzügliches Exemplar. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Ernest the Pious, 1640-75, thaler of 1675, Gotha, on his death and funeral. Rare, especially in this quality, handsome patina, minor rim cracks, very attractive, extremely fine.)"
The first duchy of Saxe-Gotha having lapsed in 1638, a new Saxe-Gotha was erected in 1640 which lasted only until 1680, when it was divided. Most if its issues are scarce to rare.
