Sincona sale 11, lot 902
Julich in 1547

This specimen was lot 902 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 50,000 CHF (about US$61,900 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Jülich-Kleve-Berg, Herzogtum Johann (III.), 1511-1539. Guldengroschen o. J. Grosser, behelmter Schild von Jülich, darunter im Halbkreis fünf weitere kleine Wappenschilde. Rv. Szene zur Bekehrung des hl. Hubertus. Sehr selten. Bohransatz auf dem Rv. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Julich, Kleve and Berg, John III (1511-39), undated gulden. Obverse: helmeted arms of Julich, smaller shields around; reverse: scene of the martyrdom of St. Hubertus. Very rare, attempted piercing on reverse, good very fine.)"

The price realized suggests the rarity of this very early thaler. Only later did the gulden shrink compared to the thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.37 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-8925; Noss 281.
