Künker sale 400, lot 149

This specimen was lot 149 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €36,000 (about US$46,703 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"JÜLICH-BERG, HERZOGTUM, Wilhelm V. 1539-1592. Taler o. J. (um 1540), Mülheim. Münzmeister Jasper Fleming. Außen: (Zweig) GVILE'* D'* G'* DVX * IVLIE * GELRIE * CLIVIE * AC * MONT'* CO' Innen: * * MAR' ZVT' Z' IN' RAVENS' D' A' RAVEN' Geharnischtes Brustbild l. mit Barett, an dem eine Straußenfeder herabhängt, und mit umgelegtem Mantel//· IN · DEO * : * + * : SPES ' MEA ' Vierfach behelmtes, siebenfeldiges Wappen (Jülich, Geldern, Kleve, Berg, Mark, Zütphen und Ravensberg). Von größter Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit kräftiger Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Frankfurter Münzhandlung GmbH 142, Frankfurt/Main 1994, Nr. 105. (Germany, duchy of Julich-Berg, William V, 1539-92, undated thaler, circa 1540, Mülheim mint. Obverse: double row legend, armored and mantled bust left with feathered beret; reverse: four helmeted, seven-fold arms of Jülich, Geldern, Kleve, Berg, Mark, Zütphen and Ravensberg. Extremely rare, atractive example with strong patina, extremely fine.)"

The duke of Berg, also duke of Cleve and Julich, count of Mark and Ravensberg, ruled a substantial territory in the lower Rhineland surrounding the archbishopric of Cologne. Wilhelm's sister, Anne, was briefly the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England. When the last duke died in 1609, Brandenburg and Pfalz fought a war over the legacy and in 1624 partitioned it, an opening act of the Thirty Years War.
