Ponterio sale 182, lot 217

This specimen was lot 217 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 2 Taler, ND (1680-86). Hall Mint. NGC AU-58. Leopold I (1658-1705). Dark toning, sharply struck." The type was struck 1680-86 and, while it is expensive, is more available than most double thalers. Künker states that this undated type was struck circa 1691-92.
