Peru 1794-L IJ 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 1268 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $285.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, bust 1/4 real, 1794IJ, portrait type, NGC VF details / cleaned. Steel-gray toning, bold strike with parts of rims crude (as made), correctly graded but evidence of old cleaning seems irrelevant for this scarce issue. NGC #4724416-013." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type, shown here) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver, .024 troy oz ASW.
