Steve Album Auction 52, lot 1826

This specimen was lot 1826 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $96. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, BI kurush, AH1223 year 15, somewhat weak margins, uneven tone, two-year type, Choice XF, ex Ralph A. Cannito (with tag)." This kuruş was part of the fourth issue of silver during this reign. These coins are dated years 14-15. The coinage was suffering violent gyrations in value and the kurush was issued in the fourth, fifth and seventh issues only. The reform of the next reign would stabilize the coinage until the collapse of the Ottomans at the end of World War One.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.5 g, 0.465 fine silver, 32 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-569, Cr-176b.
