Sincona sale 33, lot 3295

This specimen was lot 3295 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$475 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TÜRKEI. Mahmud II. 1808-1839 1 Sürre Altin 1821. Gutes vorzüglich. (Turkey, Ottoman empire, Mahmud II, 1808-39, one surre altin of 1821. Good extremely fine.)"

This denomination and the similar el-aliye surre altin (KM 621) were struck especially for pilgrims going to Mecca. They are now rare. The gold was the victim of frequent manipulation and the denominations changed names in a confusing manner. The SCWC lists zeri mahbubs, rumi altins, adli altins, yeni altins and hayriye altins for this period. Matters were regularized in the reign of Abdul Mejid, with gold coins issued in multiples of the kuruş.
