Stephen Album sale 37, lot 2354
SA37-2354r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2354 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $154.70. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AV sûrre altin al-aliye, Darulhalife, AH1223 year 15, uneven surfaces, lustrous, EF to AU, ex Ahmed Sultan Collection." This type was issued years 15-16 (1821-22). This denomination and the similar esseniye surre altin (KM 625) were struck especially for pilgrims going to Mecca. They are now rare. The gold was the victim of frequent manipulation and the denominations changed names in a confusing manner. The SCWC lists zeri mahbubs, rumi altins, adli altins, yeni altins and hayriye altins for this period. Matters were regularized in the reign of Abdul Mejid, with gold coins issued in multiples of the kuruş.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.56 g, gold, this specimen 1.61 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-101, KM-621.
