New Guinea 1936 penny

This type was struck at Melbourne for the Australian territory of New Guinea in 1936. It bears the monogram of king Edward VIII. Additional pennies were struck in 1938 and 1944 in the name of George VI. The scene of fierce fighting during World War Two, the region obtained its independence in 1975 as Papua New Guinea.

Recorded mintage: 360,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 6.6 g, bronze, 26.7 mm diameter.
