This type was struck at Melbourne for the Australian territory of New Guinea in 1938 and 1945. Previous shillings were struck in 1935-36 in the name of George V. The scene of fierce fighting during World War Two, the region obtained its independence in 1975 as Papua New Guinea.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.
Specification: 5.38 g, 0.925 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.
