Great Britain 1660 unite Fr-269
This specimen was lot 1143 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 18,000 CHF (about US$21,573 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Commonwealth, 1649-1660. Unite of 20 shillings 1660, London. Mintmark anchor. 14 laurel leaves. Extremely rare. NGC VF35. Slightly weakly struck." This unite, struck 1658 and 1660, is among the last issues of the Commonwealth. Oliver Cromwell died in 1659 and his son, Richard Cromwell, was not interested in succeeding him. There was no resistance when prince Charles returned from exile and was crowned king Charles II.
