Great Britain (1660-62) 6 pence KM-402
This specimen was lot 33591 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,560. The lot description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Charles II 6 Pence ND (1660-1662) MS62 NGC. First hammered issue. Among the final hammered issues in British numismatics, where wide-scale usage of milling technology was on the horizon making these issues especially difficult to source, especially in Mint State assignments. Mint flash abounds the protected recesses of the legends, while Charles II's iconic bust reveals characteristic striking weakness but ultimately does little to detract from the immense eye appeal of this impressive survivor." Oliver Cromwell's death in September 1658 left a leadership vacuum which was quickly filled by inviting prince Charles back from exile to become Charles II. The first series of silver coins of his regime reverted to the old practice of not dating them and come in denominations of penny, tuppence, threepence, groat, sixpence, shilling and halfcrown. When milled coinage was introduced in 1663, copper coinage was produced for the first time since before the Civil War.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.01 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 3.11 g.
