Sincona sale 18, lot 2199

This specimen was lot 2199 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 550 (about US$725 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Louis d`or au buste nu 1787. Metz Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, louis d'or of the bar bust of 1787, Metz mint, very fine.)"

The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date is priced about 50% higher than the common date (1787-A).

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 7.55 g.

Recorded mintage: 256,218[1].

Catalog reference: Duplessy 1707. Fr-475; Ci-2183; Gad-361, Dr/4 № 881, Dr/2 № 605.
