Austria 1858-V thaler Dav-21
This specimen was lot 3131 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Vereinstaler 1858. Venedig. Vorzüglich. Kl. Kratzer. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, union thaler of 1858, Venice mint. Extremely fine, Small scratches.)"
This type was struck 1857-65 and was the first type struck to the vereinsthaler standard (18.52 g, 0.900 fine). The 1858-V from the Venice mint is a better date. After 1867, Bismarck forced Austria out of German affairs and the Hapsburgs thereafter had little reason to conform to German monetary conventions. The thaler was dropped after 1868 and in 1892 the corona was adopted.
