Sincona sale 51, lot 3517

This specimen was lot 3517 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815. 1/2 Franc 1809 U, Turin. Sehr selten. Schön. (France, first empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, half franc of 1809, Turin mint. Very rare, Fine.)"

This type was struck at numerous mints 1809-14 and a complete set comprises 64 dates and mintmarks. This date from the Turin mint is rare, being priced ten times the common date (1810-A).

Recorded mintage: 5,841.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge, 18 mm diameter, this specimen 2.21 g. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).
