Peru 1767-L JM 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 1243 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles III, 1767 JM, second bust ("rat nose"), very rare, NGC XF details / harshly cleaned, ex-Iriarte, ex-Almenara. Bold details with mostly choice rims, bright and light in color from polishing but still quite desirable for this elusive type (missing in Friedberg due to conflation with subsequent type, should be 27c), this example pedigreed to a significant Charles III collection and featured in a color photo in that catalog. Pedigreed to the Iriarte Collection (Aureo auction of April 1998, lot 797) and to the Almenara Collection (both stated on label)." This type was struck 1763-70 and is rare. It was the second two escudos struck in Peru for Charles III.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold.
