Colombia 1767-PN J 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 32791 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 2 Escudos 1767 PN-J VF30 NGC. Moderately circulated, yet remaining highly attractive with orange-red toning highlights at the edges. A tiny rim bruise is noted just below the last 7 in the date for accuracy's sake." This specimen is one of a series struck 1760-71 at the Popayán mint in Nueva Granada, now Colombia, during the reign of Charles III (1759-88). The Popayán mint used the old bust of Ferdinand VI until 1771, even tho the Bogotá mint was using a bust of Charles III after 1762. The two Colombian mints concentrated on issuing gold during this period; silver coinage prior to the 1810's is very rare.
