Peru 1767-L JM 4 reales
The first specimen was lot 73358 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1767-LM JM. Lima Mint. Charles III. NGC VF Details--Harshly Cleaned. Though exhibiting the noted rather harsh cleaning, this minor remains rather elusive and difficult to encounter." The second specimen was lot 41473 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[2] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1767/6-LM JM. Lima Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-55. Overdate variety (not listed on holder). The sole straight-graded example certified by either PCGS or NGC, and VERY SCARCE as a Peru "Pillar" 4 Reales in this condition in general. Some luster is preserved through the fields, with most of the evident wear restricted to the globes, and lightly toned throughout. From the Richard August Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1760-72 during the reign of Charles III (1759-88).
