Papal States 1850-R 5 scudi
This specimen was lot 1699 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PAPST PIUS IX., 1846-1878. Prägungen des Papstes Pius IX. Aus der Münzstätte Rom von seiner Rückkehr 1850 bis zur Münzreform vom 14. April 1858. 5 Scudi ANN IV/1850, R, Rom. 7,79 g Feingold. Stempelschneider Niccolò Cerbara. GOLD. R Attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Pius IX, five scudi of the year 4, 1850, Rome mint. Rare, attractive example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, 2½, five (shown here) and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1846-50 and 1854.
