Norway 1897 2 kroner
This specimen was lot 73345 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. 2 Kroner, 1897. Kongsberg Mint. Oscar II. NGC EF-45. A better date in the series, this piece does exhibit some moderate wear, but the surfaces are entirely problem free and handsomely toned." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. The specimen shown here is from of a type struck 1877-1904 and was accompanied by a silver fifty øre and one krone of similar design. Many dates are very scarce.
