Sweden 1716 daler
This specimen was lot 31780 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $440.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carl XII DeGortz Daler 1716 Publica Fide, AU58 Brown NGC. Emergency coinage. Glossy brown surfaces with a hint of luster in the legends. Scarce grade for this series." This copper daler was struck in Sweden in the closing stages of the Great Northern War when Sweden was losing and the government bankrupt. This series (the SCWC lists ten types issued 1715-19) was supposed to be redeemed in silver after the peace, hence the promise of "PUBLICA FIDE" (public faith). When this didn't happen, the government official responsible for their issue was executed.
Recorded mintage: 3,808,000.
Specification: 4.5 g, copper.
