Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74704

This specimen was lot 74704 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 2 Mark, 1716-LC. Stockholm Mint. Karl XII. NGC AU-58. This handsome 2 Mark piece exhibits a solid strike with good preservation. The surfaces are toned to a pleasing light mottled gray." This silver two mark was struck in Sweden 1709-17 in the closing stages of the Great Northern War when Sweden was losing and the government bankrupt. The variety shown here has the king's name abbreviated CAROL9; other show the usual CAROLVS.
