Goldberg sale 109, lot 2660

This specimen was lot 2660 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it sold for $300. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Italian States: Genoa. 8 Denari, 1796. Billon. Crowned arms. Reverse: Madonna and child. Superb example. NGC graded MS-66." This is a seldom seen type struck 1795-96 in the last years of the republic. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon and converted into the Ligurian Republic; she never recovered her independence. In 1815, Metternich awarded Genoa to Sardinia and followed her into the kingdom of Italy during the unification of 1860-61.
