New Zealand 1983 cent

from the Mountain Groan Collection

In 1967, New Zealand abandoned the sterling coinage she had used since the days of Captain Cook and adopted the decimal dollar and cent. This two cent piece was struck 1970-85 at London, Canberra and Ottawa, New Zealand lacking her own mint. It was made in large quantities and was superseded by the Maklouf bust of the queen (KM 58, struck 1986-88). The reverse depicts a frond of the silver fern (Alsophila dealbata).

Recorded mintage: 40,000,000 plus 25,000 proofs.

Specification: 2.07 g, bronze, 17.53 mm diameter, designed by Arnold Machin and James Berry.
