Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 481

This specimen was lot 481 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €650 (about US$866 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HAINAUT, Comté, Les Etats en révolte (1577-1579), AR demi-écu des Etats, 1577, Mons. D/ Le roi à mi-corps de f., couronné et cuirassé, ten. un sceptre de son bras abaissé et devant lui l'écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Croix formée des lettres P/H/S couronnées, accostée de 16-S et cantonnée de quatre fleurons. Très Beau. (county of Hainaut, the states in revolt, 1577-79, silver half écu of 1577, Mons mint. Obverse: a crowned and armored half-length bust of the king supports the arms of Austria-Burgundy and bears a scepter; reverse: a cross is formed of the crowned monogram "PHS", dividing 16-S and cantonned with four florets. Very Fine.)"

We see this type, issued during the revolt of the southern provinces against Philip II of Spain, also from Flanders and Brabant.
