Künker sale 354, lot 5298

This specimen was lot 5298 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,088 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BADEN, BADEN-DURLACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1806 Grossherzogtum, Friedrich I. 1852-1856-1907. Vereinstaler 1857. Seltener Jahrgang. Kabinettstück von polierten Stempeln. Herrliche Patina, Erstabschlag, winz. Randfehler, Stempelglanz. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Frederick I, 1852-1907, union thaler of 1857. Rare date, cabinet piece struck from polished dies, superb patina, first strike, minor edge flaws, uncirculated.)"

This is the key date of a type struck 1857-65. It was accompanied by a half gulden and gulden.

Recorded mintage: 18,590, the scarcest date.
