Sincona sale 6, lot 2314

This specimen was lot 2314 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,107 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Sammlung Dr. Charles Froidevaux Basel Stadt Taler o. J. (um 1710). Stadtansicht. Rv. Basilisk mit verziertem ovalem Wappen. Gutes vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city of Basel, undated thaler of around 1710. Obverse: city view; reverse: basilisk supports oval arms, good extremely fine.)"

This early thaler of Basel is the most common of the city view thalers issued in the eighteenth century. The city mascot, the basilisk, is a pun on the city name.
