Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 25608 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brabant. Albert & Elizabeth gold 2 Albertins d'Or 1601 Antwerp, AU55 NGC, Hand mintmark, a choice coin with well-struck details and full mint luster, very close to mint state." This type is recorded for 1601-09 as part of a coinage reform (see Brabant (1600-11) 2 ducats Fr-84 for more details). Of the three mints that struck this type, Antwerp is the most common.

Recorded mintage: 15,000 for Antwerp, Maastricht and Brussels.

Specification: 6.77 g, .917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW.
