Sincona sale 94, lot 3018

This specimen was lot 3018 in Sincona sale 94 (Zurich, October 2024), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$208 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Kreuzer 1813, Bern. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Appenzell, kreuzer of 1813, Bern mint. About Uncirculated.)"

Appenzell, a small canton surrounded by the canton of St. Gall, struck coins until 1816. This rather scarce type was accompanied by a four franken piece. The monetary system was 4 pfennig = 1 kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = 1 batzen, 10 batzen = 1 franken. We think the "V R" stands for "five rappen".

Recorded mintage: 86,000.

Specification: 1.11 g, billon, 17.3 mm diameter, this specimen 1.01 g.

Catalog reference: KM 10, D.T. 160, HMZ 233a.
