Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 74845
SB222-74845r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74845 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1918-M. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-65. This Miraculous example is lush with a vibrant coating of cherry and amber toning and the full Gem status is confirmed by the paucity of marking present." This type was struck 1905-08, 1912-18. The 1918 is a tough date. This fifty centavos piece replaced the fifty centavo piece struck 1869-95 under the Republic. The older coin was 13.54 g, 0.903 fine. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller fifty centavos piece (KM 446) in 1918.

Recorded mintage: 1,320,000.

Specification: 12.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, 30 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-445.
