This specimen was lot 22788 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $211.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1918-M. PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. A nice sharply struck, fully lustrous example. Though not noted on the slab tag there does seem to be the faintest trace of a 7 beneath the 8 in the date." The type is familiar to bullion investors as the 1955 five pesos has been restruck in large quantities by the Mexican government. However, the 1918, tho not rare, is not to be found on every street corner. The overdate obtains a slight premium.
Recorded mintage: 609,000, a common date.
Specification: 4.17 g, 0.900 fine gold, .120 troy oz AGW.
