Peru 1839 1/4 real
The first specimen was lot 1637 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $461.38. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, 1/4 real, 1839, encapsulated NGC MS 61, finest (and only) known specimen graded by NGC. Patchy rainbow-toning with underlying luster, the llama side struck slightly off-center, no wear at all." This type was struck at Lima 1826-56. The date is listed in the SCWC as common, tho all Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate; among the quarter reales, only the 1855 is frequently seen. Many overdates are listed, including an 1839/8.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: .84 g, 0.903 fine silver, .024 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM-143.1.
