Australia 1916-I penny

Ponterio sale 169, lot 10020

This specimen was lot 10020 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $764. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Penny, 1916-I. NGC MS-65 RB." The silver coinage for Australia commenced in 1910 but bronze pennies and halfpennies were not struck until 1911. As such, none were struck with the effigy of Edward VII. This date, struck at the Calcutta mint during World War One, is common but expensive in nice condition.
