from Jean Elsen sale 134, lot 1785

This specimen was lot 1785 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it sold for €100 (about US$141 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Louis XVIII, seconde restauration (1815-1824), AR 5 francs, 1824MA, Marseille. Nettoyé. Petits coups. presque Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, second restoration, 1815-24, silver five francs of 1824, Marseille mint. Small nicks, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1816-24 in large quantities (104 million total). This specimen, from the Marseille mint, is a scarce date. It is priced[1] about triple the common date (1824-A or 1824-W).

Recorded mintage: 1,420,354[1].

Specification: 25 g, .900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
