Solothurn 1787 10 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 2591 in Sincona sale 90 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$537 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, 10 Kreuzer 1787, Solothurn. Fehlprägung: Zweifachprägung mit inkusen Rückseitendetails. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Hübsche Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, ten kreuzer of 1787, Solothurn mint. Error strike with the obverse details showing on the reverse. Extremely rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Attractively toned.)"
This coin is listed in the SCWC as a 2½ batzen. It was also struck 1794-95. We can't tell if this example was struck from clashed dies or is a brockage (struck against another coin struck to the die). Clashed dies normally show in the fields, not the devices, while a brockage will usually show one side completely reversed. The reverse motto, "CUNCTA PER DEUM", translates as, "United by God." The monetary system was 4 pfennig = one kreuzer, 4 kreuzer = one batzen, 10 batzen = one franken.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 2.07 g.
