Künker sale 405, lot 3079

This specimen was lot 3079 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$13,121 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS MATTHIAS, 1612-1619. Ein Goldgulden aus der Zeit des Kaisers Matthias. Goldgulden 1617, mit Titel von Matthias. Münzmeister Haubold Lehner. Wappen mit den gekreuzten Stadtschlüsseln, darüber die Jahreszahl//Gekrönter Doppeladler, auf der Brust zweifeldiges Wappen (Österreich/Lothringen). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Leicht gewellt, vorzüglich +. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 64 (6645570-012). (city of Regensburg, goldgulden of 1617, struck in the name of Matthias. Obverse: arms with crossed city keys, date above; reverse: crowned double-headed eagle with the impaled arms of Austria and Lorraine on its breast. Extremely rare, slightly wavy, extremely fine or better, graded NGC MS64.)"

This type is listed for 1617-18. It was the first gold issue for this locale in nearly a century.
